Wat Mai Suwannaphumaham

(0 review) • ₭

Wat Mai Suwannaphumaham is often called by its nickname Wat Mai that means ‘new temple’, although it was built in 1780. Stop by when you are at the Royal Palace Museum, as the temple is just next door. Wat Mai is the most elaborate temple in Luang Prabang and until the mid 1900s it housed the Phra Bang golden Buddha for which Luang Prabang is named. The Phra Bang is brought back to Wat Mai during Pi Mai or Lao New Year for a ceremonial cleaning.
